Mexico looks at China/Europe market opportunities after Trump Inauguration

After recent provocations from the Trump administration, Mexico is looking at alternative markets for their products if some of the trade policies come into fruition. One of the proposed policies is a 20% tax on exports to Mexico in order to pay for a border wall between the US and Mexico.

“Mexico wants to continue to maintain trade ties with the US, but it is not willing to have conditions dictated … that no Mexican government is going to be able to accept,” said Benjamin Temkin, a research professor at the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences in Mexico City.

Mexico is now looking towards Europe, China and other Latin American countries to reduce their dependence on the United States if necessary. Experts are doubtful however about the tax as it would hit US consumers first who rely on Mexican imports to get cheaper produce.
