Russia: Novosibirsk to import and process Uzbek fruit and veg
In 2017, the Russian Novosibirsk region will begin to import fruits and vegetables from Uzbekistan by rail for their further processing and delivery to neighbouring regions, as reported by the governor of the Novosibirsk Region, Vladimir Gorodetsky.
"The first two trial shipments of containers by rail have arrived over the last two weeks and we expect regular deliveries to start approximately in May," stated Gorodetsky.
He explained that these agreements were reached during the visit of a Novosibirsk delegation to Uzbekistan. The plan is for the company "Uzagroeksport" to open offices and trading houses in Novosibirsk to deal with foreign deliveries of Uzbek fruit and vegetables.
In turn, the company "Impuls" will process the products in Novosibirsk. In the first stage, according to the governor, it is ready to handle up to 75 thousand tonnes per year. Moreover, the logistics capacity of Novosibirsk will simplify and reduce the cost of supplying fruit and vegetables to Russia's neighbouring regions.
The list of products projected to become part of this plan includes tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, apricots, pomegranates and other crops. At the moment, the Novosibirsk region imports approximately 300-320 thousand tonnes of fruits and vegetables from Uzbekistan by truck every year. With the introduction of the imports by rail, this volume should increase.
