Ecuadorian dehydrated cape gooseberry exports to Germany grew by 160%

The producers of dehydrated organic cape gooseberries from the Sumak Mikury association achieved exporting 500 kilograms of this product to the German market, which represents a 160% increase in exports over 2015, stated the Institute for Promotion of Exports and Investments (Pro Ecuador).

According to Pro Ecuador, based on data from the Central Bank of Ecuador, shipments rose from $301,000 dollars in 2015 to $782,000 in 2016.

The manager of Sumak Mikuy, Veronica Acosta, said that German customers had a high regard for social responsibility, fair price, and respect for the environment.

According to Acosta, cape gooseberries, which are considered an exotic fruit in Germany, have a good prospect. Acosta, who estimates they will export 5 tons of cape gooseberries per year, said the association wanted to obtain certification for biodynamic agriculture for differentiation in the medium term.

Exports of dehydrated fruits to Germany in the last five years had an average annual growth rate of 3.7% in FOB value and 12.3% by volume, said Pro Ecuador.
