Mike Tesselaar, Van der Lem:

"Demand for organic bananas growing from various corners"

The peak months have arrived for banana sales. "The consumption is traditionally at a good level for the first few months of the year, and once again we are seeing the market pull up," says Mike Tesselaar, who is responsible for the purchasing and sales of bananas within Van der Lem. "We are coming from a period in which there were less bananas available, but the supply is getting going now."

He looks towards the rest of the season with positivity. "The quality of the premium bananas is good. What is striking is that the market for organic bananas continues to grow. It's still a niche market, but there is increasing demand from different corners. The wider supply of childrens bananas, budget bananas, organic bananas, some combined with fairtrade, ends up resulting in extra demand."

Van der Lem has 28 ripening cells with a capacity of 35,500 boxes. The customers are in the full range, from retailers to exporters, fellow wholesalers, and catering.
