Breeding: the weapon to ensure continuity of tomato varieties

"It has so far been a difficult year for us, because with so many climate issues, it has been difficult to make selections and be certain that the varieties would perform as expected," commented representatives of ISI Sementi Spa. The fact is that the weather conditions this year have been far from normal, and it is impossible to know how the plants and seeds selected will behave. "It is a little risky, because varieties that do not perform well in the trial period are discarded, and yet in other places there may be a great demand for them," they say.

In the case of the Spanish production and the test facilities that this company has in the Peninsula, they can highlight what is happening in Almeria. Tomato microcracking is affecting the production this year because of the extreme weather conditions; however, this is helping in the selection of the most resistant tomato varieties. "If they survive what is happening this year, we are sure that they can withstand practically any climatic adversities," said sources from the company which is devoted to the genetics of food, more specifically of tomatoes and lettuce.
