African market shows potential for boosting Moroccan fruit & veg exports

The African market imports of Fruit & Veg total 5 billion USD, according to EACCE (Establishment of autonomous control and coordination of exports). With rising imports of fruits & vegetables, Morocco hopes to grow its agriculture industry by increasing exports to other African countries.

During the 8th edition of TROFEL, Africa was honored by delegations from Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Egypt. On the program were visits to packing stations, meetings with importers and exporters of the sector and presentations on opportunities to diversify markets.

In 2015, West African countries imported 238 million USD of vegetables and 321 million USD of fruit. West Africa, in particular, recorded a 16% increase in imports from USD 267 million in 2010 to USD 559 million in 2015. Its main suppliers are the United Kingdom (USD 134 million) , The Netherlands ($ 123 million), South Africa ($ 95 million) and Morocco at $ 22 million. While Morocco is much closer, it ranked fourth among supplier for West Africa.

These numbers led Moroccan officials to believe that by making trade with other African countries a priority, Moroccan exports could undergo further development.
