Five-year plan hopes to grow fruit sector in Tasmania

In order to help grow the already large $180m fruit sector in the country Fruit Growers Tasmania and the State Government have launched a five-year plan. The plan is to run through 2016-2020 and is called the Tasmanian Fruit Industry Strategic Plan.

Key focus areas include boosting export markets, increasing productivity and establishing strong industry leadership and communication.

"We've got international investors, we've got corporate farms, we've got mainland investment groups involved," Fruit Growers Tasmania president Andrew Scott said.

Primary Industries Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the strategy would help to grow the industry and boost employment.

"The jobs in fruit growing are significant, because the fruit industry in Tasmania is worth some $180 million, packed and processed, " he said.

A key goal of the plan is to make Tasmanian growers the preferred supplier to Australian and international markets by 2025.
