For the first ten months of 2016, Bulgaria exported nearly 30,000 tonnes of fresh vegetables and more than 33,000 tonnes of fresh fruit. This was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), citing data from the National Statistical Institute (NSI). Compared to the same period of the previous year, there has been an increase of 68.7% and 2.2%, respectively.
The largest contributors to the increase in the export of fresh vegetables were cucumbers, mushrooms and leguminous vegetables; respectively by 3.9 thousand, 1.9 thousand and 3.2 thousand tonnes. There has also been a growth in the export of peppers, cabbage, carrots, squash, onions and aubergines.
When it comes to fruit, the most significant increases in exports, compared to the first ten months of 2015, were observed in strawberries, apples, pears and raspberries. There have also been moderate increases in the case of grapes, apricots, peaches, plums, watermelons and cherries, while the exports of walnuts, cherries and melons fell.
From January to October 2016, Bulgaria imported a little over 193,000 tonnes of fresh vegetables and 240,000 tonnes of fresh fruit. The most imported fresh vegetables are tomatoes, while the most imported fruits are grapes.
