Veg prices dropped 25% in Beijing during December

The usual seasonal pattern is for vegetable prices in Beijing to rise steadily after a slump in December. The highest prices should then appear after the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year's Day). However, even though December has come and gone, prices for vegetables recently have been steadily decreasing. This event does not follow the tendency of the previous years.

Post-December, the supply of vegetables in Beijing is made up of three parts: vegetables which were stored during winter, vegetables produced at facilities in the North and vegetables from the South. If we compare the Xinfadi market in Beijing, the problem becomes clear. Halfway through December 2016, prices had increased and the stock was balanced. The main reason was because vegetables from Southern production plants had entered the market. This supply had made up for the deficiency in the market. Halfway January 2017, however, the supply of these Southern vegetables was reduced due to a long-term shortcoming. This is also the major reason why prices for vegetables have been continously falling recently.
