Algerians boycott bananas

Algerians have decided to boycott bananas due to the increase in prices and have launched an online campaign through social networks. The prices have increased by up to 600% - from 100DA (€0.85) to 620DA/kilo (€5.29). This comes shorty after a new financial law, applied since the 1st January, caused an increase in VAT from 17% to 19%. The Algerians were quick to protest and carry out strikes in some of the towns. Meanwhile, the slogan online for the banana boycott is “Khellih Yet'pourra” (Let it rot) and various jokes have been made referencing the expensive price of bananas, e.g. image below of boy with banana captioned : “This little boy gets given the best present”.
