"Generally speaking, the domestic fruit market has been poor this year. However, the XiangFei melons that we grew in our HaiNai planting base had a substantial increase in sales and the market prices also rose by about 80%, compared to the same period last year." Ms.Qi Wang said, from ShenZhen XiYu HuaGuo agricultural products development Co.Ltd (Western Korla Huaguoshan farming cooperatives).
The sharp increase in market prices was mainly due to three points: First, the Typhoon that landed in HaiNan on the 21st October of last year caused the production of the first crop of cantaloupe to drop by about 30%. Second, our XiangFei melons have a unique flavour, their taste, sweetness and crispness are all excellent; the awareness of the market to this products is rapidly increasing. And thirdly, we are at the brand building stage and are making corresponding efforts and improvements in the product packaging.
Planting base has expanded over 10 times
"Just take the XiangFei melon as an example; compared with the previous production season, our planting scale in Hainan has increased by more than 10 times, and the current total planting area is of more than 5200 acres. The planting begins on July 26th of each year and ends at the beginning of March. The picking period starts from 5th of October till the end of May the next year."
Stabilize the domestic market, then strive to go abroad
"In terms of the structure of the sales market, our XiangFei melons are aimed high-end sales and are mainly sold to the wholesale market, supermarket chains and fruit boutiques of the first-tier cities such as Beijing, ShangHai, GuangZhou and Shenzhen. In the near future, we will continue building the brand awareness while hoping there will be some opportunity to get guidance from the logistics experts in the fruit import and export, to let overseas consumers have a chance to finally taste our different XiangFei melon from HaiNan.
