Estimated market entrance mid-January

Beihai Wo Oranges: Enter the rooster

This is the season where all kinds of oranges go on sale. As we come closer to Chinese New Year, a brand new late-ripe variety of orange, Wo Oranges, are about make their first appearance. "At present, all preparatory work has been finished, so now we only wait for the sweetness to go up. When it reaches 15 brix, they can be harvested. Looking at the current situation in the fruit orchards, we estimate that the Beihai Wo Oranges can fully go on the market in mid-January," says the main representative of the Guangxi Fuchuan Yiguo Life Fruit company for the Beihai Wo Oranges product to Freshplaza.

Creating a new high for citrus taste
"The reason why we believe that Wo Oranges can create an unique experience of citrus taste, is because they are a new hybrid variety. The outer appearance shows that the oranges lean more towards red oranges then other orange varieties, which makes them more attractive to the eye. This new variety also mixes the aromas of oranges and tangerines, which leads to a very strong fragrance. At the same time, Wo Oranges are very condensed, with a perfect round shape. But all around the stem, there are also small wrinkles in the fruit, which makes them easy to peel. In terms of taste, the Wo oranges are more exquisite and refined than other orange varieties that are on the market during the same period, such as Maogu oranges. 100% of the oranges can be made into orange juice and they are very refreshing and juicy to eat. Recently, when we were inspecting the quality of the fruits in the orchard, we often couldn't stop eating once we had a taste."

Early adulthood of the Beihai oranges

"We will promote the Wo Oranges under a new brand, 'Beihao Wo Oranges'. This is because our Wo Oranges this year all come from Wuming in Guangxi: the county with the largest Wo Orange cultivation surface in China. The cultivation ground has a surface of around 7000 hectares. Wuming is part of Nanning in Guangxi. It has the properties of a subtropical climate, with very high temperatures and a lot of rain in the summer and a dry and moderate climate in winter. This provides the Wo Oranges with sufficient sunlight, heat, water and air. It makes the oranges very juicy."

"Although the climate of Wuming is very suitable for the growth of Wo Oranges, it is not their birthplace. When the orange variety was first bred in Chongqing, it was actually cultivated there. But because of several factors such as the climate and the soil, the growth of the fruit trees wasn't satisfactory. Five years ago, farmers from Wuming county started the attempt to cultivate the new variety on their land and discovered that the Wo Oranges loved the Guangxi climate. The whole crop was excellent. After gathering experience about the cultivation for three years, the Guangxi Wuming Wo orange trees started to bear fruit. The quality of the fruits exceeded the expectations of the farmers. This year is the second season for the oranges and you could say that they have reached adulthood in the growing process."

The year of the rooster
"Even though it's the second year the trees bear fruit, we still see it as the first year of the Wo Oranges as a product. Based on Chinese traditions, the timing is also very good, because 'the year of the rooster' sounds similar to the 'Wo' of Wo Oranges. That is why we will consider integrating this notion in the promotion and the packaging of the Wo Oranges."

"Speaking of the Wo Oranges packaging, consider the Chinese New Year. No matter if it's for the name or the quality, Wo Oranges are the ideal gift when you go visit friends and family. So in order to guarantee that the result looks good, we added a handle to the design of the packaging. The weight of the cases are also limited to 4 kg, light and easy to carry. In short, auspicious."

East China has Bursting Tangerines, Beihai has Wo oranges
Wo Oranges are the second citrus series under the guidance of Mr. Zhou. Last December, he finished the marketing of the 2016 Donghai Bursting Tangerines. "Similar to the Donghai Bursting Tangerines (produced in Yongquan Mijie in Zhejiang), Wo Oranges at present are also refined articles with a strong geographic label. Although we know that there aren't very many consumers yet, the quality of the product itself is very good and the market potential is huge. Right now, the quality of the fruits has already reached our standards. What we have to do now is a rigorous filtering procedure and to standardise the packaging. With the right timing we will introduce the oranges to the consumers and use the exquisitely fresh and sweet taste to convince them."
