Guatemalan mango producers started the year with good news - starting this year they will be exporting their product to the South American market.
According to Eddy MartÃnez, chairman of the Mango Committee of the Guatemalan Association of Exporters, Agexport, the country had reached an agreement that opened the Chilean market to this product.
"After having achieved the opening of the Chilean market, the committee will work to enter the Asian market. This, through the Free Trade Agreement with South Korea, as these markets represent a huge growth opportunity for the industry," Martinez said.
The trade representative said that they had trained at least 80 domestic producers during the last month in order to strengthen their management capacities, crop protection and safety systems to offer a high quality product to other markets.
Guatemala mainly exports Tommy Atkins, Kent, and Keitt mango varieties.
Florida, New York, and California are the main markets for the national mango, as 95 percent of the fruit exported is shipped to these destinations; while the remaining percentage is sent to the Netherlands, Norway and Central America.
