China: Yiguo group invests 950 million in Lianhua for 'new retail'

After taking over the operation rights for the whole Suning 'growing fresh' section, Yiguo group's 'complete channels' strategy has led to a new heavyweight action. In the past days, the largest Chinese fresh produce operation platform, with a price of 950 million HKD, has become the second-largest stockholder of China's largest retail sales chain, Lianhua supermarkets (00980).

On the evening of December 23, the Lianhua supermarket company of Shanghai (00980) made a public announcement that according to a stock transfer agreement, the Yonghui supermarket agreed to the transferal of the company's 237,029,400 shares of stock to Shanghai Yiguo, good for 21.17% of the company's total capital stock.

Lianhua supermarket was founded in May 1991. It was the first company in Shanghai to develop a supermarket that operated and developed as a chain. At present, it has become the largest retail enterprise of China, as a large-scale comprehensive supermarket and convenience store with multiple and complementary competition advantages. An operational retail network has been established in over 100 cities in more than 20 provinces and autonomous regions.

Yiguo was founded in 2005 as China's first online fresh produce shop. The company focused on providing high-quality fresh products from all over the world to households in Chinese metropoles in a complete and integrated shopping service. Yiguo is the largest operational platform for fresh produce in China with a leading position in fresh produce supply chains and logistics. In 2016, Yiguo successively acquired C round and C+ round financing for a total of more than 500 million USD.

Yiguo Fresh Produce's heavy investment in Lianhua supermarket and the recent announcement of the 'All products, the whole country and all channels' strategy are both part of the same concept. On November 28, on the news conference for the C+ round financing, Yiguo Fresh Produce's CEO, Zhang Yejiu, stated that Yiguo would direct great effort to the construction of online sales channels. By becoming a chain supply company, cooperating with substantial online traders and constructing cold storage logistics facilities all over China, the company will realise a complete use of both online and offline channels. From now on, the online platform will be developed as the 'new retail' channel. 

About the fact that Yiguo and Lianhua are joining hands, creator of the Yiguo group, Jin Guanglei, stated the following. In terms of fresh produce supply chains and cold storage logistics, Yiguo group has a leading and sufficient advantage that is the result of long-term accumulation. In the retail industry, it has a strong aspect of complementarity toward Lianhua supermarket. With new retail in the background, a trend of combined logistics and supply chains already exists, driven by the data online and offline. Yiguo and Lianhua will both rely on their strengths to make a valid attempt for innovation in the field of new retail.

How to welcome change in the age of new retail? It is a question that requires an urgent answer for any retail enterprise and especially for those that operate online. The fresh produce industry relies on the characteristics of high frequency, sudden demand and large scales. This has also become the optimal incision point for the realisation of 'new retail'. The Yiguo group will combine the fresh produce business with other upstream and downstream enterprises to build an ecological new retail unity with the construction of a supply chain and logistics as a core competition power. It will appear as an enterprise that completely uses every channel to meet any fresh produce demand of the customer.

Experts in the industry comment on Yiguo and Lianhua becoming a representative enterprise that realises new retail and online shopping. Not only is it a civilised agreement between two parties, but the cooperation between both is also sure to create impressive sparks and high expectations. 

They are convinced that whatever unfolds from the cooperation between the two parties, it will provide a very valuable piece of consideration for other enterprises that compose 'new retail'.
