China: Winter banana prices stay low

Winter is here and, with temperatures dropping, banana prices should be rising. But instead, they are toboganning downwards. A kg of bananas goes for no more than 3 RMB. Compared to last year, that is a drop of 2 RMB per kg. Starting in September this year, bananas went on sale in large quantities. The supply has exceeded the market demand, which is the reason why the banana price is so low.

In the previous period, the bananas sold on the market were mostly Guangxi bananas. As Guangxi entered the middle-late period and the bananas there additionally suffered from cold weather, wholesale markets decided to turn to Yunnan bananas instead. Currently, 70% of the bananas sold in Shandong, Henan and other places are Yunnan bananas. Also Beijing, Tianjin, Langfang and other markets are successively switching to Yunnan bananas, so the Northern markets have gradually been turning toward Yunnan bananas too. After one month, the market proportion for Yunnan bananas in the North has already reached over 50%.
