China: Sweet red dragon fruit production doubled

"Our red dragon fruits blossom every year in March. The trees bear fruit around mid-May. Compared to last year, our production volume has doubled, and prices have also increased. Our dragon fruits are currently sold both through traditional platforms and online. They are sold in the wholesale markets of Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and similar first-tier cities," says Ms. Duan Yu from Hainan 18 North Fruit.

A thin peel and very sweet

"The rise in price and sales volume mainly derives from the the special characteristics of the dragon fruit variety we cultivate. In the past few years, the dragon fruits imported from Vietnam have always been very popular with Chinese consumers. Vietnamese red dragon fruits look rough on the outside, with thick flaps that look like fish scales. The fruit peel is thick. Compared to those Vietnamese dragon fruit varieties, our dragon fruits have a thin peel and the fruit is smooth and round. The fruit is also sweeter, up to 22 or 23 brix."

A cultivation system for tropical fruit
"A few years back, we successfully imported the cultivation of the Taiwanese red dragon fruit. We have already registered as several brands, such as the '18 North orchard' and the 'Jiulong Red'. At present, we have 7 cultivation bases of more than 1333 hectares each in Dongfang city in Hainan. We estimate that the yearly production can reach over 200,000 tons."

"The plans for this red dragon fruit cultivation base exceeds 4666 hectares. Additionally, there are plans for a cultivation base of 3333 hectares for other special tropical fruits such as avocado, sugar apple, yellow mangosteen, natural papaya, muskmelon, red bananas, passion fruit and others. The total planned cultivation surface for the future covers 8000 hectares. It will form a complete tropical fruit cultivation system."
