"Weed control in fresh-cut crops is increasingly problematic as the soil becomes deconstructed. This used to be tackled with manure, which restored its chemistry and structure, however it may be a carrier of Escherichia coli and retailers require for it not to be employed. Flame weeding therefore remains the only viable alternative," explains owner Marco Mingozzi.

Machines are equipped with GPL burners and organs that work the soil superficially. "We have just presented our PTKCK. It is shorter and has a stone burier that works at a depth of only 10 cm. The front adjustable casing can be adapted to different conditions. The machine is suitable for clayey and stony soils."

The flame temperature is 1700°C and 650°C on the ground. The machine was developed in cooperation with CREA. Flame weeding can be used after harvesting to eliminate residue as well as to reduce the risk of fungi and the presence of insects.

In addition, it can also be used to sterilise the soil. In this case, flame weeding is used with soil working equipment (rotary harrow or stone burier) before sowing. There is no need for high-power tractors, 30-50 cv are enough for the smallest machines.
"Flame weeding is an ecological method to disinfest and disinfect. Many fresh-cut companies tried it and never looked back."
