China: Onion price slightly up

Currently, the price of onions in the North of China is very cheap overall. Perhaps because some vendors have a different timing to bring in their goods and a different quality, both low and high prices are found for onions. But in the main onion producing region of Gansu, the purchasing price of yellow onions is unexpectedly going up. The price of yellow onions is in fact going up so fast, due to the recent onion stock of merchants in Shandong and Henan.

Leading figures in the industry don't have a good eye in the currently high prices on the onion market. From one side, that is because the onion cultivation surface has increased with 15% to 20% in comparison to last year in the regions of Gansu and Inner Mongolia. This means that the surge of the onion price will only be short-lived. On the other side, this means that export orders will reduce compared to the same period last year.
