Dominican Republic: Agreement to promote fruit and vegetable exports

The Center for Export and Investment of the Dominican Republic (CEI-RD) and the International organization, Executive Service Corps (IESC), agreed to join efforts to contribute to the growth and consolidation of SMEs with export potential, especially those related to the pineapple , cacao, avocado, oriental vegetables, and greenhouse-vegetable value chains.

The organizations want to develop their beneficiaries' business management skills so as to facilitate their positioning and access to international markets.

The organizations signed an agreement on interagency collaboration to develop joint actions that will benefit the Dominican agricultural business in training areas, the promotion of products, and to increase sales in international markets, so that they become more competitive and gain access to more and better markets, especially under the DR-CAFTA Agreement.

The agreement was signed on October 25 at the premises of the CEI-RD by the heads of the institutions, Henry Molina, executive director of CEI-RD, and Brian Rudert, director of the Exporting Quality and Safety (ECI) program, which is implemented by the IESC and funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The director of the CEI-RD, Henry Molina, highlighted the importance of having close coordination between the public, private, and international organization sectors to promote the promotion and development of Dominican products in domestic and international markets.

He stated that this agreement would contribute to the strengthening and diversification of the country's exportable supply and that it would attract new markets, which would benefit the country's productive sector, the Dominican society, and international consumers.

The agreement provides for the development of a work plan covered by three pillars: the promotion of an integration system of exportable production, aimed at preparing proposals for knowledge generation and support associativity; boosting training initiatives that are aimed at improving the competitiveness, productivity and profitability of enterprises; and promoting the participation of domestic enterprises in international events where they can exhibit and promote their products.

"The CEI-RD will provide all the necessary technical assistance to achieve the program's success. It will coordinate the actions and measures to establish productive linkages and the development of business with different sectors and agricultural producers," said Molina.

Meanwhile, Brian Rudert, said the ECI will provide assistance to producers and exporters of the cocoa, avocado, pineapple, oriental vegetable, and greenhouse-vegetable value chains, to enhance their opportunities of accessing the United States and other markets.
