Twitter parties result in thousands of re-tweets and a wide reach

Social media motivates grape purchase

Social media has become an important tool for the California Table Grape Commission. “Thousands of fans from the US and around the world follow Grapes from California,” says Jeff Cardinale with the CA Table Grape Commission. This includes Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter. The social media pages are managed by the commission’s communication department and in-house ad support.

Just recently, the commission tweeted about the many moments that grapes can be eaten: such as an easy portable snack in the car or as a late-afternoon boost of energy in the office. Grapes are also a hydrating snack for a workout or outdoor activity. The post on Twitter elaborates on that idea by sharing a link to over 60 #SnackTime ideas with California grapes on the @GrapesfromCA Pinterest page. Fans get to see a wide range of beautiful photography that displays the many snack moments for grapes.

Throughout the season, the commission hosts a number of social media contests to get people excited about California grapes and motivate purchase. For example, a contest was held on Facebook and Pinterest during the summer with Food Network star Ellie Krieger, called “Make it a California Grape Summer with Ellie Krieger”, and a Twitter Party was held in the summer with dozens of top bloggers in the country participating. This month, the commission plans another Twitter party with a “Go With Grapes” theme.

“Twitter parties are a popular way to instantly interact and spread the California grape messages on social media to a captive audience,” said Cardinale. The audience then shares those messages with their followers, often resulting in thousands of tweets and a wide reach.
