Dutch onion export has 15-20% of global market

Van Dam: “Strong position of Dutch onion demands constant innovation”

The Netherlands accounts for 15 to 20 per cent of the global market for the export of onions. Chances for higher returns are increasing due to the growing world population and the increasing attention on healthy eating. Because of the expected increase of the world production to 150 million tonnes in 2050, the Dutch onion has many market and export opportunities. This is written in a report by State Secretary Van Dam of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in answer to questions put forward by the Lower House.

The Dutch onions take up a very prominent position on the global market. More than 90 per cent of the Dutch onions are exported to a great number of destinations. The international market position of Dutch onion exporters is based on the good quality of production and the relatively low price. It is supported by very efficient agricultural logistics, which ensures the onions are delivered in good quality and at the correct place and time.

However, the strong international position of the Dutch onion cannot be considered a given. It constantly demands innovations within the various links of the chain to continue to supply good and reliable quality. Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important theme. It is therefore important to show a recognisable Dutch face in this field, according to Van Dam.
