Watermelon carvings are popular on Weibo

In the last few days, Qian Weicheng, a student at Qinghua university, has become famous on Weibo due to his artful carvings on the inside of a watermelon. The carvings drew the attention of netizens who manically shared the pictures with their friends. Netizens now call Chen 'Watermelon brother' or 'Divine spoon hero'. Qian Weichang says he initially only started carving out watermelons because he suddenly felt interested.

With regards to the technique of carving, Qian Weichang says that the classes in basic sketching methods he took for three years in secondary school, are a great help to his carvings. He says that he usually drafts an underpainting layer onto the watermelon before he can start carving. He scoops out the desired shapes with a spoon or a Swiss army knife. "When several lines are concentrated in one spot, a spoon just doesn't do the job, so in that case I need to use a knife."
