Mexico: Still no agreement on avocado imports to Costa Rica

Fernando Baeza, the Mexican Ambassador to Costa Rica, said that they were looking for options to find the ideal channel to formalize the trade dispute regarding the entry of Mexican Hass Avocados to Costa Rica.

The Ambassador made these statements after Costa Rica's Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Luis Felipe Arauz, stated in an interview that there might be a possible settlement agreement regarding Costa Rica's ban on avocado imports.

According to the Mexican diplomat, they could either take it to the World Trade Organization or refer to the free trade agreement signed between Costa Rica and Mexico.

In 2014 Costa Rica cancelled the trade agreement for the entry of Mexican avocados because, according to them, the Mexican fruit could have a quarantine disease that would put at risk Costa Rica's production; an action that contravened the treaties established between both countries and that violated international laws.

According to Baeza, the Mexican Government is currently deciding whether to raise the status of the case to a dispute.
