More than 600,000 plants of the Italian variety

Pir5 Strawberry continues to rise in Bazil

Pir5 strawberries are really popular in Brazil where they are 20-30% more expensive than others. We talked about them three months ago because of a TV programme in South America.

"This year about 600,000 plants have been planted in the several produttiva areas. In mid-November my colleague Pierluigi Lucchi and I will go to Brazil to check the development of the productive phase of establishment of seed plants in plant nurseries. Also, we will set off for a trip to evaluate products and get opinions from producers," explains researcher Gianluca Baruzzi (photo), from Crea in Forlì.

In Brazil the harvest starts in June and finishes at the end of December. According to the producers, Pir5 strawberries are demanded because it for their taste. It is clear that Brazilians have been able to make it unique and consumers can identify and buy them at the sales areas.

The most productive area is north to São Paulo and supplies about 50 million consumers. "Producers - Baruffi continues - are satisfied because they managed to get good-sized fruits, thus, a perfect compromise between quantities and quality. Santa Caterina University, in the South of the country, manages the trades. Farmers appreciate Pir5 strawberries because they are wild-flavored and suitable to their lands with no fumigation".
