Mexico: Escuinapa is looking for a market for 10,000 tons of mango

The orchards of Escuinapa still have nearly 10,000 tons of Keitt mango to be marketed. Unfortunately, they are facing a big problem as the packaging and juicing industries are closing down, said the leader of the CNC, Padilla Rogelio Salcido.

“It's going to take some time to market the mango remaining because the market is saturated. We hope we can gradually sell it in the domestic market," said the leader.

This fruit season was good for the southern municipalities, he said, as production went from 156,000 tons in 2015 to 200,000 tons this year, which were mainly exported.

As there was a good supply of mango, prices did not increase and traders continue to buy it at 2 pesos per kilogram, he said.

At this same time last year, a kilogram of mango was being sold for up to 8 pesos. Back then, however, there was little mango left and the market was not as saturated as this year, Padilla Salcido added.

This year, sale prices for the Keitt mango variety in the municipalities remained at 2 pesos per kilogram. Prices did not increase hugely, but producers made more income.

The mango remaining could be sold on the domestic market or to industries that make dehydrated mango, as the fruit remaining in the orchards is starting to ripen.

Padilla Salcido said the municipality had 13,000 hectares of mango and that the closure of the packaging and juicing industries, among others, meant that the season was virtually over.
