Mark Tieleman, Cool Fresh International:

"Freakishly high prices for pineapple"

There are high prices being made on the pineapple market this year. "It was lower for just four weeks at most earlier in the year, but other than that the prices have been incredibly high. At the moment you can sell pineapple, depending on quality and size sorting, for a price of between 15 and 17 Euro. We've never experienced this before," says Mark Tieleman of Cool Fresh International. "The supply has reduced strongly due to the rainy period last year and the results of this are more than we had thought."

According to the importer the high prices are no hindrance to quick sales. "Everything available outside of the programmes is literally being grabbed from your hands. I expect this tight supply to hold up for another week or two. Then there will be more supply and there will undoubtedly be more price pressure, but there is certainly no question of of this at the moment. We are assuming a positive month for September," says Mark. "After a year like this it's good to know that the production in 2017 will be in order and we will have a normal balance between availability and price level."
