Indian banana farmers request help from scientists

On the occasion of the 23rd foundation day of the National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB), banana growers on urged scientists at the centre to come up with proper guidelines for marketing their produce. The farmers also requested them to develop a banana variety which could withstand drought.

While explaining the ordeal involved in marketing the fruit at the event, Puliyur A Nagarajan, president of the farmers' wing of the Tamil Maanila Congress, said farmers who could not get adequate price for their produce had recently set fire to plantain trees in thousands of acres.
