Stonefruit prices are stable as volumes fall

According to Afrucat, trade is flowing and prices are stable in this summer's stonefruit campaign.

Manel Simon, CEO of Afrucat, said: "Prices are above production costs and higher than in the two previous campaigns. The current stable prices are similar to those of the 2010 and 2012 campaigns."

However, the CEO of Afrucat recalled that there would be a significant decrease in this year's harvest and that this would affect each producer differently, according to their final production volume. "The producers that maintained production will have a better outlook than those who lost many kilos," he said.

"At any rate, the 2016 campaign has been marked by two atypical events. On the one hand, the Russian veto has lasted another year and, on the other hand, we have had extraordinary measures since the marketing started. Beginning the campaign with extraordinary measures has allowed us to almost forget the Russian veto," said Simon. He then added that "the temperatures in the target markets have increased this summer and they don't have any stock."

Afrucat presented Catalonia's economic area application
Afrucat has submitted a request to the Department of Agriculture so that Catalonia be recognized as an economic area. Achieving this would allow the association to request standard extensions, which are mandatory for all operators established in that territory recognized as constituency.

Lately, various associations and inter branch organizations have requested standard extensions as the only way to value their production and raise funds to promote their products. Afrucat believes the future standard extensions will be a tool that will allow it to organize and improve the quality of their products and knowledge.

Manel Simon said that, despite the enormous possibilities of extending the standard, these standards should always be approved by a majority vote in Afrucat's general assembly.
