Colombia: A fungus threatens onion

An outbreak of Puccinia allii, which is very dangerous for onions, was identified in eight farms in the areas of La Bella and La Florida. This fungus, which had been eradicated from Pereira two years ago, threatens the onion production of the second half of the year.

According to Carolina Cardona, secretary of rural development of Pereira, the appearance of this outbreak not only threatens onion crops but also garlic and scallions crops. So far eight farms have reported affectations caused by this fungus that starts as a white stain and later turns red affecting the crop's leaves.

Currently, authorities are conducting a full inspection of all crops in this rural area of Pereira with the ICA and taking the necessary measures to prevent the outbreak from spreading. In addition, authorities are seeking to establish the origin of the infected seeds to eradicate them from the area.
