Citrus consumption continues to increase in Sweden

According to a fruit category manager for a major Scandinavian retailer, tastier oranges and easy peeler varieties are boosting consumption in Sweden. These newer varieties are extending the season, making high quality citrus more available year round.

Between 1990 to 2005, the per capita consumption of citrus in Sweden was at a stable level of 14.5 to 15 kg per person, this has now increased to 18.2 kg per person. Western Europe also saw an increase during the same period (1990-2005) from 19 to around 24 kg.

Oranges and easy peelers are leading consumption with oranges at 9 kg and easy peelers at 6 kg, followed by lemon/lime 2.4 kg and Grapefruit at 0.8 kg.
