Ann Beyne, Tomabel:

"Our volume of organic mushrooms has grown rapidly"

Tomabel is the only Belgian growers union to offer organic mushrooms. In 2015 the mushroom producers decided, in discussion with REO Veiling, to fully switch to an organic assortment. The REO Veiling supported Tomabel with a small packaging department. The range contains white mushrooms, brown mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, mini oyster mushrooms and shiitake. We don't offer regular mushrooms anymore, only organic," says Ann Beyne of Tomabel.

Growing volume
She says the producers recently expanded in production. "Since we started organics the volume has increased by 30%. This growth is both in current growers and producers who have joined us. There were five growers and now there are seven producers who offer organic Tomabel mushrooms.
The volume of white and brown organic mushrooms has grown particularly quickly. New buyers are therefore always welcome. An important reason to only offer organic mushrooms is that it's more profitable for our growers. The demand for organic products is also rising and we want to play into this. We are also looking to expand our range of organic mushrooms."

Tomabel doesn't expect a switch to organic for other fruit and vegetables under the brand any time soon. "We are open to it, but it's difficult in relation to the switch period."
