Boyer expands their exotic fruit production

Having started to produce mangos in Peru over three years ago, Boyer are now working with local Cambodian producers to develop the Cambodian “Kéo” variety. Head of the group, Joel Boyer explains, “We were approached by Cambodian producers at the Berlin Trade Show, who wanted to integrate the European market”. The green light was given last winter, when 15 to 20 producers were pre-selected over a trial period to produce 50 tons of samples.

Mr Boyer explains that the first imports suffered from a few problems with the air transport, but that problems with the cargo and wrapping were being adjusted. In Cambodia each mango is now protected in a sleeve 40 days before it reaches maturity. Mr Boyer explains that “This system, used on the Chasselas for a long time, protects from the rain, humidity and removes the need for pesticides.” Thanks to this protection, there is no pesticide residue on the mango and it has a more homogenous yellow colour, as it has not been in the direct sun.

This variety will officially be launched on the French market by the start of next year. Boyer hopes to produce 200 tons by next winter. They also intend to add a new product to their Philibon range : dragon fruit. A trial was carried out this year in Central America and La Reunion, 10 or so small packages were exported to France, and the results were said to be impressive.

Exotic fruits represent 16% of Boyer's turnover (13% in 2013). 1,500 tons out of the 32,000 tons of fruit they produce are exotic. Every year, amongst other fruit, the company exports 350 to 400 tons of lychees, 500 tons of pineapples and 40 to 50 tons of passion fruit.
