Spain: Canary bananas have new ambassadors

The Spanish swimmer, world champion, double European champion and Olympic silver medallist, Mireia Belmonte, and the double world champion and European badminton champion, Carolina Marín, have become ambassadors for the flavour and healthful properties of Canary bananas.

To that end, the two athletes have signed a sponsorship agreement with the Association of Organisations of Producers of Bananas of the Canary Islands (ASPROCAN), which gives support to more than 8,000 banana growers in the Canaries. The agreement involves the support of the brand Plátano de Canarias until at least the end of summer 2017.

Canary bananas are directly linked to sport and are a common product in the diet of athletes, both professional and amateur, which is why support has been given to the country's sport, being present in diverse competitions in multiple disciplines at a professional and amateur level, as well as school competitions in different places nationwide.

In this regards, the president of ASPROCAN, Henry Sicilia, affirms that "Canary bananas wanted go a step further and support not so much a particular sport, but women's sport directly, as it does not always receive the attention it deserves. Undoubtedly, our country has great female athletes. Mireia Belmonte and Carolina Marín are unique and together represent one of the best combinations of our sport. Working closely with them, we aim to promote the many qualities and health properties of our fruit, as well as its unique flavour."

He adds that Mireia Belmonte and Carolina Marín are two recognised Spanish athletes, a model for children and young people, who have shown real courage and effort to reach the goals they had set for themselves, in the same way Canary banana producers do in their field. For Plátano de Canarias, "having ambassadors who share our values of effort, hard work and healthy lifestyles is a reason for pride," he affirms.

"The Olympics are a key moment for our athletes, but our support to Mireia Belmonte and Carolina Marín does not end there; it actually starts at the next Olympics. We want to support them in their daily lives, whatever the outcome in Rio, and stand behind them to face the new challenges coming in 2017," concludes Henry Sicily.

For her part, Mireia Belmonte says that "it is an honour to be linked to Plátano de Canarias; a brand that has always been supporting sport, which is a symbol of health and healthy lifestyles, and they are doing so while bringing the message to young people that it is possible to eat well, do sports and enjoy life."

Carolina Marín also highlights the support of Plátano de Canarias, considering it "a very important endorsement for its recognition of the effort and work that female athletes have been carrying out for years."
