Inés Mori, of Agroindustrias Vida:

"Peru: "Spain exports increasingly more strawberries and our fruit will be necessary"

A couple of months before the peak of the Peruvian strawberry harvest, there is growing speculation about the actual impact of climate change on the crops. "This campaign, for the months of September to December, we expect good volumes, because last year there were many irregularities and there was some trouble with the yields and fruit quality. This year, we expect better results because the climate has been more favourable, but we still have to wait," affirms Inés Mori, of Agroindustrias Vida.

Furthermore, discussions in the sector comment on how the trade export window for this fruit is becoming progressively more interesting each season, both for neighbouring countries and Europe. "In the months of October and November we have a very interesting window in Spain. Last year, we exported about 50 tonnes to this market, and for the domestic market we produce more than 500,000 tonnes," states Mori.

"According to our sources, a lot of Spanish fruit is produced for export, so there is often a shortage in the domestic market. Our small exports are intended for that market, mainly in the months when Spain does not produce. This year, the goal is to double the volume, as we do not actually face any direct competition in Latin America, given how most countries do not export yet or do not have the same commercial windows," concludes the representative.
