Jan Smit, Smit’s Uien:

“Sales red onion rings booming”

Demand for peeled onions, onion blocks and onion rings is doing very well at the moment, according to Jan Smit of Smit’s Uien (Smit’s Onions). Smit’s Uien is a family company that developed itself to be the largest supplier of peeled onions, onion blocks and onion rings for catering, fishmongers and fresh produce sectors. “Catering is our most important branch, but during herring season fishmongers are also always extra good for sales.”

“We normally experience a peak in onion block sales the first few weeks after the Dutch herring arrives, only for demand to drop again slowly after that, but this year sales are still booming, partly thanks to the weather and the good quality of the herring,” says Smit. “Traditionally, less herring is eaten during the winter, but the onion consumption fortunately continues, albeit in hash or pea soup.”

“You can usually see a shift in the consumption of onions during the summer holiday as well. People are eating outside at the campsites or amusement parks, and those usually have sliced onions in their fixed assortment of sandwiches and snacks. A clear trend with that is that sales of red onion rings have been booming in recent years.”
