High-quality melons are laser-marked at Naturamica

"After a difficult start because of the weather, the melon season seems to have recovered," reports Daniele Lorenzini from Naturamica.

"Thanks to the exclusive non-invasive 'Well Brix' analyser by Tokyo's Sumitomo Metal Mining, we can process different data and characteristics. 'Well Brix' works with Near-Infrared Transmission to analyse sugar levels, flesh compactness and internal imperfections in real time. We check every single fruit and only those complying with our quality standards are laser-marked to guarantee traceability."

Laser-marking guarantees the quality of the product.

Analyses are monitored through lab tests (up to 5% of the production). Additional cross-checks are carried out manually by operators in charge with finding external defects.

The market is quite lively now that temperatures are high, "though there is a lot of difference between the prices of high-quality and mass productions - up to 50%."

A few months ago, Lorenzini became part of the Amazon Prime Now circuit and their date tomatoes are the most popular product after bananas. They also have an e-commerce platform on their website. Shipping is free for the first order and you can also choose from ripe melons to eat in 3 days or others with a 7-day shelf-life.

The company sells around 5000 tons of melons every year. "It is a niche product for consumers that want only the best on the market. We work a lot with wholesale markets, because they are a point of reference for high-quality retailers. We also focus on those tourist areas where a lot of people go in the summer months."
