Kenyan fresh fruit importers enjoying high demand

The demand for fresh fruits and vegetables in Kenya continues to rise by the day creating a niche in the market which has seen more players come on board.

The retail of fruits and vegetables in Kenya was a few years ago dominated by small traders operating from tiny shops and public markets but this is changing as formal retail of fruits and vegetables is picking up, particularly in Nairobi.

One of the companies that has taken advantage of the rising demand is Zucchini Greengrocers Ltd, a leading importer of fresh fruits.

According to George Osiko, a manager at Zucchini Greengrocers, the Kenyan population has become more aware of the health benefits of fruits pushing the demand up.

“We seek to serve every Kenyan, everyone can get something from our stores. We don’t have a specific class we target, we strive to ensure every Kenyan gets something from our stores. Our fruits are very affordable and from time to time we give offers to prove to customers that we are in this business to serve all,” explains Osiko.

According to Osiko, while other retailers sell one packet of grapes at $5.5, Zucchini Greengrocers sells the same at $3.7.

Some of the fruits that Zucchini imports are apples, oranges, tangerines, grapes, cherries, peaches and nectarines.

“We source some of our fruits like oranges locally but much of what we stock is imported from South Africa, the Netherlands, Egypt and Spain,” explains Osiko.

From his point of view, the Kenyan import market is set for better days ahead even as more competitors join in to get a share of the growing demand. Osiko believes Britain's exit from the European Union will not have much effect on the import industry as prices of produce is dependent on the exchange rate.

“Our customers are willing to walk the journey with us so we will continue to look out for new ideas on what else we can introduce to the local market. Our promise of quality has remained unchanged over the past 10 years,” adds Osiko.

Zucchini strives to remain at the top of the market by providing a wide range of healthy produce from all over the world.
