Mexico suspends imports of US potatoes

Producers in the sector welcomed the decision to suspend imports of US potato made by the seventh district court.

The National Confederation of Potato Producers stated that the legal battle to suspend potato imports from the US because, as they have warned, there are 59 identified pests that threaten the plant health of Mexico's production had began three years ago.

They also said that they had been and spoken against the agreement establishing risk mitigation measures for the import of tubers since 2012, as it would jeopardize the national production.

In 10 years, the United States failed to meet the phytosanitary commitments and sent the potatoes that were contaminated with some quarantine pests to the border, the organization said.

As imports of US potatoes didn't stop, Mexican producers filed 10 appeals against the risk mitigation agreement.
