Lower price increases popularity of Prata banana

Once upon a time a Prata banana cost double what the Cavendish banana cost. “But now, prices are down almost matching at the local markets in Brazil. In general the Prata banana is of a medium price. They are sold for about 1.30 compared to 0.91 Reais for the Cavendish bananas. This benefits the market share of the Prata banana,” states Ivanete Pereira dos Santos, manager of Abanorte Brazil.

“Compared to 25-30 years ago, Brazil's local market preference has changed from the Cavendish to the Prata. Nowadays, about 50% of the market is dominated by the Prata banana, because of the flavour, taste and good shelf life. There are regions in Brazil that changed their whole plantations to Prata bananas,” continues Ivanete.

He explains: “The combination of the right climate, fertile soil and irrigation gives the Prata banana its good quality. This fruit has such an amazing flavour which can be eaten in it's natural form and can impress even the most reserved pallet. The Prata banana is being recommended for people of all ages as it can be digested very quickly. Additionally, its slow oxidation process makes it a great option for fresh cut and fruit salads.”

The fruit is well known within the national market. “The fruit can be found in the main customer centers in Brazil and throughout the whole country. Therefore, in order to insure the fruit will be of the guaranteed high quality, every precaution is taken with the production process, from the harvest to post-harvest of the banana. As a result, the fruit should please every consumer’s taste.”

Even though the banana is a well known product worldwide, promotion is still needed in the international market, said Ivanete. “The ripening process of the Prata banana differs from the Cavendish. The Cavendish ripens earlier than the Prata. Trials of sending Prata bananas to countries such as EUA, Dubai, France, Belgium and Portugal have taken place. The fruit is exotic and has a different taste and appearance, which is interesting for markets that appreciate new products.”

Ivanete concludes: “The Jaíba Region is our trademark and Abanorte wishes to improve the returns to the growers with a high quality and get development for our region. We know we have a long journey ahead when it comes to getting the Prata Bananas well-known in the international market, but we are going for it!
