Mikado Kyowa Seed, leading seed company from International Cooperative Group Limagrain takes on this challenge and teams-up with Chiba University Department of Agriculture.
Plant factories are production systems that allow the production of vegetables in a close environment, allowing nature preservation, high productivity in any location close to a consumer. Today Japan is on the leading edge for this innovative technology with 200 farms already supplying Kanto & Kansai consumers with fresh clean vegetables.
On June 22nd MKS & Chiba University signed an agreement where MKS will use Chiba University plant factory as a location to breed innovative lettuces. MKS donated 500,000 JPY to the university.
Partnering with Chiba University, MKS will be able to offer Japanese and world market innovative varieties. These varieties will have specific aptitudes fitting grower and consumer needs, including health benefits for example.
