As durian and mangosteen of Thai import go through their peak period, prices are 20% higher than the last few years. Experts also explain that due to dry weather in Thailand, production volumes are lower, so prices go up.
In fact, Thailand is suffering the most severe droughts in 50 years. Water supplies are the lowest since 1994 and no less than 548 counties suffer from water shortage, amounting to 59% of the Thai area.
Not only does the drought reduce the production volumes of durian and mangosteen, but the fruits also grow slower and are therefore smaller in size. In the main Thai production region of Chantaburi, prices are at their highest in ten years.
