Edwin Medrano, of Rainforest Organic Perú:

"Ginger prices may fall by 10% due to Chinese exports"

The Peruvian ginger harvest has been delayed by a month, mainly due to the climate changes caused by El Niño. "This year, we'll be able to start harvesting from late June, which for us entails a delay of over a month. Normally, we start in May, but the intense heat has extended the summer and the ripening process has been slow, so it has not been possible to start harvesting in the usual period. Fortunately, this delay has not affected the quality of our products and sizes have remained unchanged," assures Edwin Medrano, of Rainforest Organic Perú.

Despite this late harvest, prospects are good for Peru's organic ginger, as neither the volumes nor the quality will be affected and exports will benefit from it. "Our volume has increased and our exports are also expected to grow, because we do not face much direct competition. While we started the campaign at the same time as Brazil, they export the white variety, while we ship the yellow one, so there is a market for both," affirms Medrano.

"The only downside we see in this campaign is that prices have been affected by the large volume of Chinese product being exported. Although demand for organic products has expanded in recent years, mainly in the European and American markets, we estimate a depreciation of 10%. In any case, Peru exports a different variety and the quality of the organic ginger we offer is superior," concludes the spokesperson.
