Twist tie system hoping to expand internationally

Twist-Ease tie dispensers can primarily be found in produce departments and bulk food departments in grocery stores. “In the produce department, the purpose of the tie is to seal a plastic bag as a properly sealed bag allows the consumer to bring produce home clean and sanitary,” says Jeff Helseth with Twist-Ease. “Additionally, it prevents the product from falling out and bruising. Because the twist tie is so easy to take off the bag, it also enables the consumer to re-use the bag.”

Another purpose of the tie is to write on it. Grocery stores that sell nuts, dried fruit, etc. in bulk use the aptly named ‘flag ties’ for their customers to write the product code on. A flag tie has enough space to write a product codes for easy identification at checkout.

Twist-Ease just launched a new dispenser that holds 2,400 ties instead of 1,200. It saves on time and labor as the dispenser needs to be filled less frequently. The new product is also more hygienic. Instead of plastic dispensers a metal mounting bracket is permanently affixed at the store. The twist ties are glued into a plastic casing which clicks into the metal bracket. “We saw the need for a different type of twist tie system because refillable plastic dispensers become dirty over time,” mentioned Helseth.

All 50 states
Twist-Ease has been around since 1989 and the company has traditionally been focusing on the US market. “We are very well established and our product is available in all 50 states in the US,” said Helseth. The company is now trying to get international exposure by making its way into Canada, Australia and Mexico. “Grocery stores in these countries only have loose twist ties in cups available and therefore we see big opportunities in these markets.”
