China: Bayberry listing time delayed, but yields increase

"Judging by the nationwide level, this year the overall bayberry yields have increased compared with that of last year, therefore the price decreases a bit, but early bayberries are sold at a higher price due to their limited production volume." Explained Mr. Ji from Joint Development Agricultural Company.

"The company is located in Shiping County in Yunnan Province. We have around 15 hectares of outdoor cultivation. We plant three bayberry varieties: Dongkui, Piqi and early bayberries. Our early berries are listed in the market between mid April to end April, followed by Piqi variety, whose listing season ends by mid May. In terms of Dongkui, its marketing season starts from early May and it can last until end of May. Compared with previous years, the listing season this year has been delayed 2 weeks due to the cold waves that occurred in the beginning of this year. "

"It is known that Shiping County in Yunnan province, Xiju County in Zhejiang province, and Zhangzhou city in Fujian province are the hree main bayberry productions in China. Generally speaking, the bayberries from Xianju County and Zhangzhou city list in the market after the rainy season, between June 10th to July 10th, while the bayberries from Shiping County list in the market before the rainy season, thanks to its high-altitude and better laterite soil. "

"The market listing season resulted in different bayberry qualities. Those who list before the rainy season rarely have insects and better taste. "

"The company was established in 2013, and we are in the process of getting our trademark registration. Thanks to our cold storage center and packaging plant, we have applied the modern technologies such as vacuum and sterilization for professional packaging to our products. In terms of logistics, we cooperate with an external delivery company to ensure the freshness of our bayberries. Our fruits are sold across the whole nation, 60% of which are sold to Zhengjiang province, and it is worth noting that online sales account for around 50% of our overall revenue."

"As a major agricultural province, Shiping County has been giving strong industry support to our company, including technical training. Looking ahead, we will maintain the existing scale of bayberry cultivation, while at the same time developing our deep processing capacity or bayberry drying technology. "
