Costa Rica

Turrialba volcano has remained active

Last Thursday there was a strong eruption of the Turrialba volcano, in Costa Rica. This entails the expulsion of gases, hot rocks and ash, which is covering many areas of the Central Valley. Ashfall was reported in areas of San Jose, Coronado, Ipís, San Pedro de Montes de Oca, San Isidro Heredia, San Pablo Heredia, Tibas, Pavas, La Uruca, La Sabana, Santa Ana and Alajuela.

Eruption of the Turrialba volcano 12/05/16

The activity continued over the weekend and Monday. Again, gas and ash eruptions took place, as reported by the OVSICORI (Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica). The systems recorded four eruptions between 11.30 and 12.30 local time (17.30 and 18.30 GMT), but due to the prevailing clouds, the experts were unable to visually determine the magnitude of these episodes.

For all we know, there are fruit and vegetable companies located in areas of ashfall, although we have been told by Costa Rican companies that fruits and vegetables will not suffer too much damage. The capital, San Jose, has been affected, as well as the valley in which it is located. Some companies have offices in San Jose; however, no production areas are located in this valley. The production area of San Carlos, for instance, is far from the affected areas. Thus, the eruption is not a problem for exporters, but is rather a local problem.
