Russia: Kursk region developing greenhouse cultivation

The Kursk region has taken up President Putin’s call for Russia to grow its own produce, which will not just replace imports, but be able to rival them in terms of quality.

At the time of the introduction of the sanctions on imports from various countries, only one greenhouse enterprise was growing vegetables in Kursk. This was the agro-industrial complex of the Kursk nuclear power plant, which grows little more than three tons of vegetables a year, on an area of 12 hectares. This amount was clearly not enough to provide Kursk citizens with local produce.

In order to solve this problem, a program for the development of vegetable production was introduced at the regional level. Under the scope of the program, in two years, two new agrocomplexes with large greenhouses were built- these are Agro-Park, which covers more than 11 hectares and has a production output of around 6,600 tons, and Seyim-Agro, which covers 7.4 hectares and is capable of growing more than 7,000 tons of vegetables. Both complexes will grow "ecologically clean" vegetables.

Head of the agro-industrial complex of the Kursk region, Ivan Gorbachev said, "We have very ambitious plans, which include growing more than 17,000 tons of vegetables and herbs in the region."

In order to realise those plans, no less that 10 hectares of greenhouses need to be built in the region. Hence, almost 48 million rubles from the regional budget has been allocated for the construction of greenhouse complexes in the Kursk region in 2016.
