Spain: 51,747 tonnes of bananas available in February

In February 2016, the Canary Islands shipped 34,251 tonnes of bananas to mainland Spain, while imports from Africa and Latin America amounted to 20,765 tonnes and re-exports reached 3,269 tonnes, so Spanish consumers had access to about 51,747 tonnes of bananas. This is around 4,517 tonnes more than last month, representing an increase of 9.6%. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in Spain has fluctuated between a minimum of 34% and a maximum of 40%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in February were Costa Rica, with 6,522 tonnes, and Ivory Coast, with 4,049 tonnes, which together accounted for 51% of the total volume. Moreover, Costa Rica, with 3.4 million Euro, and Ivory Coast, with 2.6 million Euro, were the main suppliers in terms of value, accounting for about 50% of the total.

In the first two months of this year, shipments from the Canary Islands have exceeded 63,920 tonnes, imports from Africa and Latin America have stood at 44,673 tonnes and re-exports have reached 9,624 tonnes, so the available supply has amounted to 98,976 tonnes, 16,219 more than in the same period of 2015. Their market share has fluctuated between a minimum of 35% and a maximum of 45%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in the first two months of the year were Costa Rica, with 11,548 tonnes, and Ivory Coast, with 10,876 tonnes, accounting for 50% of the total volume. Moreover, Ivory Coast, with 7 million Euro, and Costa Rica, with 5.7 million, were the leading suppliers in terms of value, accounting for about 50% of the total.
