Wilko van der Zwaard: “Comparable to Florida, but without rind damage”

Moroccan grapefruit season started

The Moroccan citrus season at Wilko Fruit is well under way. “We have two weeks of supply of Nadorcott in Marrakesh left, packaged in a Gaudias box and black boxes. We also package these for retailers in smaller packages of 750 gram and one kilo,” Wilko van der Zwaard says. “Additionally, the Maroc Lates already started three weeks ago. We transport these under the Gaudias and the La Gazella brands. The Maroc Lates season started a little later, because earlier in the season the citrus did not yet have the right brix and juice content. By now the oranges have a brix of 12-13 and a high juice content. The season started very well and we will continue until August in order to link up with South Africa.

Packaged under Gaudias, 'Fruits for pleasure'

By now the Moroccan grapefruit season of the variety Star Ruby has also started. “We started with Eurokartons and Gaudias. We offer the Moroccan grapefruit until the start of the South African grapefruit season in three weeks time,” Van der Zwaard explains. “This grapefruit comes from a special area in the Moroccan mountains, situated on the same degree of latitude as Florida. The grapefruit has a beautiful, red blush, comparable to grapefruit from Florida, but they are free of rind damage. The product is characterised by its thin rind, extremely high brix and is brimming with juice.”
