Apple and kiwi situation from logistics point of view

Currently, Nord Ovest is shipping apples and kiwis to Canada, US, North Africa, Middle East and India. "The volumes we handled over the first three months of 2016 are double those of the same period in 2015. This situation is perfect to understand how the domestic sector is affected by the closure of other reference markets such as the Russian one, by the difficulties of exporting towards Libya, the problems on the Algerian market and the abundant Polish stocks."

Massimo Delpozzo, Sales Manager for Nord Ovest Spa, talks about the company, which is owned by the Mellano family and has been working in the international logistics sector for over 40 years.

Delpozzo refers that apple and kiwi stocks are still abundant, "so the campaign is expected to last longer than usual. Over the past few years, fruit storing techniques have definitely improved, so everybody was able to manage the produce better and have it available for longer."

What is affecting exports are mainly "indirect problems. The new European Customs Code will enter into force in May 2016 and it may cause unforeseeable problems. Then, in July, the SOLAS CONVENTION will enter into force. It will require shippers to weigh containers using approved equipment. These two amendments will have a substantial effect on the parties involved in handling containers."

For what concerns new destinations, Massimo Delpozzo explains that "we have recently reached Koper (Slovenia), Valencia, Tarragona, Madrid and Barcelona, where we have established partnerships with operators who specialise in the management of fresh shipments. This means our Italian clients interact with a single interlocutor that can manage maritime and air shipments not only from Italy."

"In addition, the web platform and the smartphone App presented at the 2016 fair in Berlin continues to raise a lot of interested. Before the start of the new campaign, we will launch a new and more complete version. I must say that our clients played an essential role in helping us develop the portal."
