Arjen Bouma, Gilad Produce:

"Habanero peppers a niche market, but an interesting one"

"Consumers are increasingly discovering the versatile flavours and the popularity of local product is also on the rise. This is why more and more exotic crops are being grown and are successful, even if it is a niche product. A good example of this is the Habanero pepper," says Arjen Bouma of Gilad Produce. The company receives the first harvest of red Habanero peppers this week from one of its growers. "The cultivation looks good, so the expectations are good."

"With a Scoville score of 350,000 this Habanero pepper belongs in the top lot of the hottest peppers. This means it isn't a pepper to eat whole like a Jalapeño. But for those who wants to vary their meals it is an interesting product. It also offers good opportunities for the trade. We are talking about small volumes, but the opportunities are there," continues Arjen.

Besides the red, yellow and orange Habanero there are also Jalapeño, Padron, Naga Jolokia, Scorpion Trinidad and Carolina Reaper. Gilad also has red, green, yellow and orange Cayenne peppers available. "Dutch peppers are grown all year round under lighting and the growers are allowed to export to the USA and Japan by the KCB. Quality crosses borders," concludes Arjen.
